Starry night - Vincent Van Gogh

Starry night, painted by Van Gogh was designed from is asylum room in France 1889. This piece really inspired me by the way he used mark making. Although this could be interpreted in different ways, I view this as a man vs god conflict, and the mark making really encourages my thoughts. The wavy lines of the trees, sky and mountains (natural parts of the world’s landscape) in comparison to the straight, ridged edges of the manmade world below. The man made buildings is also a lot smaller than the rest of the landscape, implying that god/ nature will always be more powerful than the unnatural buildings.

I also admire the colour and pattern of the sky. There is a lot going on with the painting, the curves and blue colours in the sky make me feel like there is something wrong, maybe he’s sad or facing challenges (like being in the asylum) and the bits of yellow reflecting throughout the sky makes me believe he still has some hope left in him. Maybe hope that he will one day be free, or hope for the people in the town.
